Septic Tank and Holding Tank Monitoring

Septic Tank and Holding Tank Monitoring

What is a septic tank and holding tank monitor?

A septic tank or holding tank monitor is a device installed at the tank site that monitors the liquid levels in the tank.

Through real-time monitoring, you can detect septic tank and holding tank issues early.

High liquid levels indicate you may be experiencing a blockage in your tank bed. If the anaerobic bacteria in your tank aren’t decomposing waste fast enough, the liquid level will rise and cause backflow into your pipes.

Consistent low levels could indicate a leak in your pipes or a tank leak.

A PTLevel liquid level monitor provides high and low level alerts by email and SMS, history graphs, and level reports as frequent as every 4 minutes.

How to: PTLevel Installation in a Septic Tank or Holding Tank

1. Gather your tools and materials

Everything comes supplied except a length of regular electrical conduit the depth of your tank.
You need a drill, a Philips screw driver, and your WiFi password.

2. Power your device and connect to WiFi

To power the Long Range Wireless PTLevel, plug in the Receiver and put the supplied AA batteries into the transmitter.

To power the Wired WiFi, just plug in the device.
Follow the simple WiFi connection steps within the App.

3. Prepare your conduit length

Since the septic adapter is pushed and held in place rather than just lowered, you will need to:
– measure or estimate the depth of your septic or holding tank
– determine how high you want your conduit to stick out the top of your tank (most people choose about 12″)
– use those measurements to determine the length of the conduit piece needed

The supplied septic tank adapter is 9.5″

4. Assemble the septic adapter with the conduit; step by step

First thread the tubing through the conduit.

Second, thread the double-sided cap onto the tubing.

Then press the tubing onto the septic adapter barb.

Fourth, thread the cap onto the septic adapter.

Last, push the conduit into the other end of the double-sided cap.

Install the septic pressure chamber

The base of the septic adapter should be about 1″ from the bottom of your tank (or installed about 1-2″ above the solids layer in your tank)

Using the supplied flange you can secure the conduit to the side of the septic tank lid.

Close up any remaining holes

Use silicone or other sealants to seal up any gaps that may be created.

What does a happy septic tank look like? It depends!

In most cases you will see consistent lows and highs that never go below about 20% and never go above about 60%
(Your tank may be optimal at different percentages)

Your septic tank likely has a first compartment and a second compartment.
The first compartment has the sewage and liquids directly from your house. The second compartment is filled with the liquids from the first tank after settling and decomposing.

Most people choose to install their PTLevel in the second compartment.

The image below is of a PTLevel installed in a septic second compartment. You can see the liquids rising from usage, and then when the liquids get high enough a pump is turning on to release the liquids into the septic bed.
